Book of Genesis: Fallen Angels and Nephilim Giants

Part One: Understanding Genesis 6 (the Fallen Ones and the Nephilim)

I created this blog to share the things I have learned from my history of mental illness, how it led to addiction, my journey to sobriety, and how God rescued me in the process. I know many people are struggling with similar issues and though you can find a plethora of worldly solutions; I wanted to shine a spiritual light on these topics. Worldly solutions aren’t enough, especially when dealing with the things that keep us in bondage. God made a way through his son Jesus for people to be set free and delivered from all forms of spiritual bondage. The problem is that many churches are not teaching anything spiritual, rather preferring to preach the prosperity gospel sprinkled with a little easy-believing doctrine.

Are we forgetting what kind of God we serve?

The straightforward answer is yes. I believe people are forgetting what kind of God they serve, a supernatural God. The same God who parted the Red Sea, sent down the 7 plagues, and gave David the ability to slay Goliath. The same God who is described as “an all-consuming fire” in Hebrews 12:29. A God that told Moses when he asked to see God in his full glory in Exodus 33:20 “And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.” Being in our flesh, which is fallen by nature, and viewing God’s presence in all of his glory, would simply burn us up. Our God is without a doubt beyond our comprehension, but we can view the many examples of his super naturalness in the Bible. Having a correct view of God is imperative, yet many people’s view of God is still flawed.

The Spiritual Things 

One common topic that seems to be deliberately left out of Sunday sermons and Wednesday Night Bible studies is the subject of the spiritual realm. Could it be that preachers just don’t believe it, or do they avoid it because they themselves do not understand it? The Bible is full of examples of the spiritual aspect of life, with mention of things like angels, demons, strongholds, healing, and deliverance. How is it that these extraordinary details are being skimmed over or left out altogether? I want to focus on these things in this series of blog posts because I believe it is the missing link that connects many biblical topics and events.

Angels

In the Book Of Genesis, we read about the “fallen ones”. The angels who gave up their home in Heaven to follow Lucifer in his rebellion against God. Most people know this, but it usually ends there. What emerges after was perhaps one of the most significant missing puzzle pieces for me in getting a better understanding of God and the Bible. In the first few verses of Genesis 6, it says:

“Now it came to pass when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.”

How many people do you think read over this verse, completely missing what it is telling them? Let’s examine these verses for a better understanding. When mankind was procreating and daughters were born, their beauty captivated the angels, and the angels took them as wives. After that, we can easily deduce that they had intimate relations, which is why God said: “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Could it be, that angles and mankind were not meant to procreate with one another?

The Nephilim

Directly after reading that, we read about giants being on the earth in those days. Giants that resulted from angels having offspring with human women. These giants, which were hybrids, half-angelic beings, and half-human, were referred to as mighty men of old, men of renown. These hybrid beings are also referred to in the Bible as Nephilim meaning fallen ones and giants. Take notice that all of this information is given to us directly before the Great Flood is introduced. I didn’t fully understand the reason for God sending the flood until I thoroughly understood what took place between the angels and human women. Now when I read about the flood I understand why God sent the flood. Mankind had become tainted by the mixing of angelic beings and humans. This further explains what God was referring to in Genesis 6:5-7 where it says:

“And God saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.”

The effects of this intermixing of angelic beings and humans caused a great negative influence amongst mankind. Man rebelled against God, just as Lucifer and his fallen angels did. Leading to an earth that was full of corrupt inhabitants, that desired wickedness. Knowing this explains why God felt it necessary to cause a flood. If you know the story of the flood in the Bible, you know that Noah and his family were spared. So out of all mankind, Noah, and his family were the only ones worthy of saving.

In the end times, mankind will revert to the wickedness that was inhabiting the earth that we read about in Genesis 6. We know this from Matthew 24:37 which says, “As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.” What a grim and foreboding verse, more reason not to be foolish and caught unaware, as the people were in Noah’s day.
